Job Title: Civil Practice Legal Intern - Fall 2025
Job Responsibilities:
The Civil Practice Legal Intern will work under the supervision of Civil Practice attorneys at the organization. The primary responsibilities include assisting attorneys in improving the lives of low-income New Yorkers by helping vulnerable families and individuals obtain and maintain basic necessities such as housing, health care, food, and subsistence income or self-sufficiency. The intern will contribute to enhancing family and community stability and security by resolving a wide range of legal problems, including but not limited to anti-eviction, domestic violence, family law, immigration, employment, tax, health, elder law, HIV/AIDS, and consumer law issues.
Essential duties of the intern will involve:
- Drafting motions, pleadings, memoranda of law, and affidavits.
- Conducting legal research.
- Attending court and administrative hearings with attorneys.
- Assisting with client interviews.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must be a current 2L or 3L law school student in good standing. While relevant clinical program or work experience is preferred, it is not a mandatory requirement. The intern should demonstrate a commitment to and interest in serving racially and socioeconomically oppressed communities. The ability to work collegially and collaboratively with all members of the staff is essential. Candidates should have the ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and think critically. Fluency in languages besides English, particularly Spanish, is helpful but not required.
Salary Information:
The internship is non-paid. However, interns who meet the eligibility criteria have an opportunity to receive a $1,000 stipend from the Howard Rossbach fund. This stipend is awarded through a lottery system and aims to support 4-5 interns annually who demonstrate financial need and lack funding for their internship at the organization. To be considered for this stipend, interns must be enrolled as a degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate student at any accredited institution, complete the Howard Rossbach Internship Stipend Form at the time of submitting their internship application, be accepted to participate in an internship program at the organization, demonstrate financial need, lack funding for their internship, and submit a statement reflecting the student’s strong interest in working at the organization upon graduation.
