The **Members Only** offers a fall internship program for law students interested in gaining exposure to criminal law and courtroom litigation. This internship provides students with the opportunity to work directly with experienced attorneys on felony, misdemeanor, and juvenile cases, while also receiving training on court procedures and local practices.
The fall internship is primarily based out of the Albuquerque office, but opportunities may also exist at other LOPD offices. The program is open to law students from any American Bar Association accredited law school, as long as they have received a passing grade in law school courses totaling at least thirty semester hours and are familiar with the Rules of Professional Conduct.
Interns and volunteers may be able to advocate for clients in court by entering their appearance in hearings such as bond arraignments, motion hearings, trials, and plea and sentencing hearings. However, in order to do so, students must meet certain minimum requirements and obtain a certificate from their dean specifying the time frame of their internship.
The LOPD does not offer paid internships, but works closely with schools to accept students who may earn credit during their internship. Students may also secure specialized funding through fellowships, educational institutions, or other organizations.
To apply for an internship or volunteer position, interested students must submit a full application by emailing it to ****. The application should include a resume, cover letter, and current transcripts. Application deadlines are as follows:
