Job Title: Deputy City Attorney
Job Responsibilities:
The Deputy City Attorney will assist with the prosecution of misdemeanor cases in the Los Angeles County Superior Court. Responsibilities include:
- Reviewing reports from law enforcement agencies to determine whether to file misdemeanor charges.
- Attending meetings and providing legal advice to law enforcement agencies.
- Conducting misdemeanor trials.
- Overseeing municipal code enforcement issues.
- Assisting the City Attorney with administrative tasks.
- Supervising clerical assistants who are assigned caseloads of civil litigation and administrative matters.
Education and Experience Information:
- Graduation from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association.
- Membership in the California State Bar and admission to practice before the California Supreme Court in good standing.
- Experience in the active practice of law, with a preference for experience in criminal litigation.
- Excellent written and oral communication and advocacy skills.
- Knowledge of State, Federal, and Municipal Law, specifically criminal law.
- Experience working with governmental agencies, elected officials, public officials, and individual residents.
- A commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
Salary Information:
- Monthly salary range: $9,693 - $14,319.
- Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) of 5% effective July 1st, adjusting the range to $10,177 - $15,035 monthly.
- The Deputy City Attorney classification is an at-will position with a 12-step salary scale.
- The successful candidate can be appointed to a salary step based on years of experience.
Additional Information:
- The City offers a robust health, retirement, and other benefits in accordance with the Hawthorne Executive Group (HEG) Memorandum of Understanding. Benefits may change due to employer-employee negotiations.
- The City contracts with CalPERS for medical benefits and a defined benefit retirement plan, with PEPRA 2% @ 62 and Classic Members 3% @ 60 with EPMC covered by the City.
- The City observes 15 paid holidays, and HEG employees accrue up to 130 hours of Administrative Leave.

Selection Procedures:
- Candidates must complete a City employment application with supplemental responses, attaching an accomplishment résumé and cover letter. The filing period opens on Monday, June 16, 2025, and closes at 4:00 PM on Monday, July 21, 2025.
