Job Title: Fall 2025 Law Clerk

Job Responsibilities:
The role of a Fall 2025 Law Clerk within the organization involves working closely with dedicated Juvenile Defenders on various aspects of case preparation. This includes gaining substantive skills, developing written work products, and obtaining real case experience. Law clerks are tasked with legal research, drafting motions and memoranda, case planning, investigation, witness coordination, and preparation for and during trials, hearings, and/or sentencings. They are fully integrated into trial teams, working alongside attorneys, investigators, paralegals, social workers, and other support staff to ensure comprehensive defense for the organization's clients.

Education and Experience Information:
The Fall 2025 Law Clerk positions are open to current law students or recent law school graduates. The program is designed to provide hands-on experience and is aimed at law students seeking to enhance their practical skills in a real-world setting. Applicants must be enrolled in a law school program and are typically in their 1L, 2L, or 3L year.

Application Process:
Applications for the Fall 2025 Law Clerk positions are accepted on a rolling basis, with specific start dates in the winter, spring, and fall. Interested candidates must submit an application form along with a resume, cover letter, list of four professional references, a writing sample not exceeding 15 pages, and an undergraduate transcript. The application materials must be emailed within a couple of days of submitting the form, but no later than August 1, 2025. Incomplete applications will not be considered. The position requires a commitment to start by September 2, 2025, and work for at least 10 weeks.

Salary Information:
The Fall 2025 Law Clerk positions are unpaid volunteer roles. However, the organization supports externs seeking academic credits for their work and sponsors grant or other outside funding applications where applicable.

Additional Information:
The organization provides opportunities for law clerks to engage in significant research and writing, witness preparation, investigations, and trial preparation, all within a client-centered and team-based representation framework. Law clerks are expected to commit to consistent days and hours throughout their clerkship duration. The organization has multiple district offices throughout the State of Maryland, and candidates are encouraged to specify their preferred office locations during the application process. Only the Montgomery County and Baltimore City offices are accessible via public transportation.
