Job Title: Fall Law Clerk
Department: Prisoner & Reentry Legal Services
Job Responsibilities:
The Fall Law Clerk position involves supporting attorneys across five of the organization's legal divisions: Appeals, Civil Legal Services (general and special education), Special Litigation, and Trial divisions. Additionally, clerks directly represent clients in the Community Defender Division's Juvenile Services and Prisoner & Reentry Legal Services programs. The role requires clerks to engage in various legal tasks, which may include conducting legal research, drafting legal documents, and assisting in case preparation. Law clerks are expected to work 12 to 15 hours per week during the semester, or 35 to 40 hours per week if participating in a full semester program. The clerks will gain exposure to the workings of the criminal legal system and contribute to the defense of individuals charged with serious criminal acts.
Education and Experience Information:
To qualify for the Fall Law Clerk position, applicants must be second or third-year law students, or students enrolled in law school on a part-time schedule who are in their 1L fall semester. Candidates must possess strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills. A preferred qualification is a demonstrated commitment to indigent criminal defense representation or experience working with low-income children or adults in an advocacy or related role. This position is part of a credit-bearing externship course, and only students participating in such a course are eligible.
Salary Information:
The Fall Law Clerk position is a volunteer role. Participants are required to be enrolled in a law school externship course to qualify for the clerkship program.
