The City of Huntington Beach is currently seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Trial Counsel (Senior Deputy City Attorney) to join their team. This individual will play a crucial role in the City Attorney's Office, representing the City in all aspects of legal representation. The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years of experience practicing law in California, with a focus on civil trial work. They will also possess strong legal research and writing skills, as well as experience with Writs, Appeals, and other trial documents.
As a Senior Trial Counsel, you will handle a diverse range of litigation work, including Writs, Appeals, civil litigation, trials, and damage or other civil suits in State and federal courts. You may also have the opportunity to represent management in hearings involving City employee disciplinary matters. In addition, you will have the chance to work on cases involving tort defense, writ actions, Pitchess motions, appellate work, civil rights actions, code enforcement, nuisance abatement, administrative actions, and employee grievances.
The City Attorney's Office is responsible for handling all lawsuits in-house, prosecuting crimes at the local level, and advising the City Council and all City officials on legal matters pertaining to the business of the City. This includes defending the City in every lawsuit, preparing and reviewing all City Ordinances, Resolutions, contracts, and other legal documents. The City Attorney's Office also prosecutes criminal cases arising from violations of the City Charter or Huntington Beach Municipal Code, as well as State misdemeanors that the City has the power to prosecute.
The ideal candidate for this position will have a Juris Doctorate degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association. They will also have at least 5 years of experience as a practicing trial attorney within a municipal law office or a private firm that has contracted with a public agency for legal services. State and Federal jury trial experience is highly desirable. Additionally, the candidate must possess a valid California Class C driver's license and be a current member in good standing with the California State Bar Association.
