Job Responsibilities
The Advocate General within the department of Juvenile Affairs plays a crucial role in overseeing a comprehensive grievance program for children who are legally in the department's custody. The position operates within the Division of Advocate Defender, separate from the Office of General Counsel. Key responsibilities include:
- Supervising personnel at children's institutions and facilities, acting as student defender/representatives.
- Investigating unresolved juvenile and staff grievances related to juveniles, and sending unresolved complaint reports to the Office of Juvenile Systems Oversight for review by the Executive Director.
- Providing recommendations and reports on grievance procedures, hearings, and investigations to the Executive Director, Office of Juvenile System Oversight, and other relevant parties.
- Ensuring the appropriate reporting of abuse or neglect allegations concerning juveniles in custody, whether in private or office-operated facilities.
- Collaborating with the Executive Director to establish a system for investigating allegations of misconduct by individuals responsible for children in the custody of the department of Juvenile Affairs.
- Coordinating hearings or meetings of review committees for unresolved grievances or investigations.
- Offering training internally and externally on policies related to the safe and proper care for youth in custody.
Education and Experience Information
Candidates must possess a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and a license to practice law in the State of Oklahoma. Active membership with the Oklahoma Bar Association is required, along with a minimum of three (3) years of legal experience.
Special Requirements
- The incumbent will be required to travel as part of their job responsibilities and must possess a valid Oklahoma driver’s license for operating state-owned vehicles.
- Must be able to pass OSBI and FBI background checks.
- The incumbent is expected to complete Hope Navigator training within 12 months of appointment.
- The incumbent is expected to stay informed about the latest updates and standards from state and federal Ombudsman Associations.
Salary Information
The annual salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
