Job Title: Civil Practice Legal Intern - Fall 2025
Job Responsibilities:
The Civil Practice Legal Intern will assist attorneys within the Civil Practice department at the organization. Interns will be placed in various NYC Borough offices and specialized units, notably the Immigration Law Unit. The core responsibilities of the intern include assisting attorneys who work to improve the lives of low-income New Yorkers by helping vulnerable families and individuals secure basic necessities such as housing, healthcare, food, and subsistence income. The attorneys aim to enhance family and community stability and security by resolving a broad range of legal issues, which include, but are not limited to, anti-eviction, domestic violence, family law, immigration, employment, tax, health, elder law, HIV/AIDS, and consumer law issues.
Interns will work directly under the supervision of Civil Practice attorneys. They will be involved in drafting motions, pleadings, memoranda of law, and affidavits; conducting legal research; attending court and administrative hearings with attorneys; assisting with client interviews; and performing other duties as assigned. Mandatory supervision will be conducted, and interns will have opportunities to attend intern trainings, webinars, and Continuing Legal Education (CLE) relevant to their internship.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates for the Civil Practice Legal Intern position must be current 2L or 3L law school students in good standing. While relevant clinical program or work experience is preferred, it is not required. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to and interest in serving racially and socioeconomically oppressed communities. The ability to work collegially and collaboratively with all members of the staff is essential. Additionally, candidates must have the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines and think critically. Fluency in languages besides English, particularly Spanish, is helpful but not required.
Salary Information:
This is a non-paid internship position. However, interns who meet the eligibility criteria have an opportunity to receive a $1,000 stipend from the Howard Rossbach fund. This stipend was established in memory of Judge J. Howard Rossbach, who encouraged young lawyers’ dedication to civic engagement through legal aid. The stipend aims to support 4-5 interns annually who demonstrate financial need and lack funding for their internship at the organization. To be considered for this stipend, interns must be enrolled as degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate students at any accredited institution, complete the Howard Rossbach Internship Stipend Form at the time of submitting their internship application, be accepted to participate in an internship program at the organization, demonstrate financial need, lack funding for their internship, and submit a statement reflecting the student’s strong interest in working at Legal Aid upon graduation. The stipend will be treated as taxable income.
Application Process:
Applicants will be notified whether they have been selected for an interview. The hiring process is highly competitive, and students are encouraged to apply early. All applications must be completed online, and paper submissions are not accepted. Applicants should visit the organization's Careers Page to review all current job postings and instructions on the application process. The organization is dedicated to building strong professional relationships with clients, understanding their diverse circumstances, and meeting their needs. The ability to achieve these goals depends on the efforts of all staff members.
