Job Title: Fall 2025 Law Clerk
Job Responsibilities:
The Fall 2025 Law Clerk position at the organization offers law students an opportunity to closely collaborate with Juvenile Defenders on various aspects of case preparation. The responsibilities of law clerks include:
- Conducting legal research to support case development and defense strategies.
- Drafting motions and memoranda as part of the legal documentation process.
- Engaging in case planning to ensure comprehensive preparation for legal proceedings.
- Assisting in investigations to gather evidence and relevant information.
- Coordinating with witnesses to prepare them for trials and hearings.
- Preparing for and participating in trials, hearings, and sentencing processes.
Law clerks are fully integrated into trial teams and work alongside attorneys, investigators, paralegals, social workers, and support staff to provide client-centered and team-based representation. This hands-on experience is designed to offer significant research and writing exposure, witness preparation, and trial preparation.
Education and Experience Information:
The position is open to current law students or recent law school graduates. The organization provides opportunities for law students to join district offices as law clerks during the spring semester (January-May), fall semester (September-December), and summer (May-August). Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
Candidates must be prepared to start the clerkship by September 2, 2025, and commit to working for at least 10 weeks. The position is unpaid; however, the organization supports externs seeking academic credits for their work and sponsors grant or other funding applications when applicable.
Salary Information:
The Fall 2025 Law Clerk positions are unpaid volunteer roles. Law clerks may seek academic credits or apply for external funding to compensate for their work with the organization.

Applications for the Fall 2025 Law Clerk positions are submitted through a centralized process, although final selections are made by the district offices. Candidates must indicate their interest in the Juvenile Law Clerk Program on the application and specify their preferred office locations within the State of Maryland. Only the Montgomery County and Baltimore City offices are accessible via public transportation.
To apply, candidates must complete the application form and email the following documents to the provided email address: a resume, cover letter, list of four professional references, a writing sample not exceeding 15 pages, and an undergraduate transcript. The subject line of the email should read "Application for Fall 2025 Law Clerk." Application materials must be submitted within a few days of completing the form but no later than August 1, 2025. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Commitment:
Selected law clerks are expected to commit to consistent days and hours for the duration of the clerkship, supporting the organization's mission for tenacious advocacy and zealous client representation.
