Job Title: Environmental Partner
Job Responsibilities:
The Environmental Partner will lead the Environmental Practice at the law firm, focusing primarily on CERCLA and other environmental liabilities within the context of mergers and acquisitions. Responsibilities include:
- Acting as lead environmental counsel on M&A transactions, with a focus on environmental liabilities.
- Handling permitting and compliance issues under federal and state environmental laws.
- Engaging with environmental agencies and managing litigation related to environmental matters.
- Providing counsel to clients on nationwide and international regulations.
- Managing all aspects of environmental concerns for clients across various industries.
- Direct client interaction and business development.
- Assuming significant responsibility on complex and sophisticated legal matters.
- Serving as a business advisor to clients, offering guidance on a full range of legal matters throughout their life cycle.
Education and Experience Information:
- A minimum of ten years of experience practicing environmental law.
- Significant experience in assessing environmental risk during the due diligence process and determining proper allocation in M&A transactions.
- Experience drafting environmental provisions, assessing the need for environmental insurance, and handling permitting transfers.
- Expertise in hazardous waste disposal issues, including RCRA application and CERCLA liability.
- Experience representing potentially responsible parties in CERCLA cleanups.
- Proficiency in evaluating Phase I, II Environmental Site Assessments and other property assessments.
- Experience collaborating with environmental consultants and opposing counsel.
- Strong familiarity with environmental laws such as CWA, CAA, RCRA, TSCA, ESA, and state analogs.
- Additional knowledge in areas like emerging contaminants, renewable energy, endangered species law, wetlands delineations, and corporate environmental stewardship.
- Strong analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team and independently assume responsibility for direct client interactions.
- A portable book of business is required.
- Candidates must be licensed in Illinois or Colorado, or eligible to waive in, or willing to sit for an upcoming bar exam in these states.
