Job Title: Civil Practice Legal Intern - Fall 2025
Job Responsibilities:
The Civil Practice Legal Intern position at the organization involves assisting Civil Practice attorneys who work to enhance the lives of low-income New Yorkers. The primary focus is on aiding vulnerable families and individuals to secure and maintain essential life necessities such as housing, healthcare, food, and income. Interns will gain exposure to a broad spectrum of legal issues, including but not limited to anti-eviction, domestic violence, family law, immigration, employment, tax, health, elder law, HIV/AIDS, and consumer law matters.
Interns will work directly under the supervision of Civil Practice attorneys, with mandatory supervision provided. They will have the opportunity to attend intern trainings, webinars, and Continuing Legal Education (CLE) sessions relevant to their internship. Specific duties include:
- Drafting motions, pleadings, memoranda of law, and affidavits
- Conducting legal research
- Attending court and administrative hearings with attorneys
- Assisting with client interviews
- Performing other duties as assigned
Education and Experience Information:
- Candidates must be current 2L or 3L law school students in good standing.
- Relevant clinical program or work experience is preferred but not required.
- Demonstrated commitment to and interest in serving racially and socioeconomically oppressed communities is essential.
- Applicants should have the ability to work collegially and collaboratively with all staff members.
- Candidates must possess the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines and think critically.
- Fluency in languages other than English, particularly Spanish, is helpful but not required.
Salary Information:
The internship is non-paid; however, interns who meet eligibility criteria may receive a $1,000 stipend from the Howard Rossbach fund. This stipend is awarded through a lottery system to support 4-5 interns annually who demonstrate financial need and lack funding for their internship at the organization. To be considered for this stipend, interns must:
- Be enrolled as a degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited institution
- Complete the Howard Rossbach Internship Stipend Form when submitting their internship application
- Ultimately be accepted to participate in an internship program at the organization
- Demonstrate financial need
- Lack funding for their internship
- Submit a statement reflecting a strong interest in working at the organization upon graduation
The stipend is treated as taxable income, and selected interns will be notified before the start of their internships.
