Job Title: Staff Attorney – Housing
Job Responsibilities:
The Staff Attorney for the Housing Team at the Central Office of the organization is responsible for representing low-income tenants who are facing court eviction in Kansas City and those involved in administrative actions to protect their rights in subsidized HUD-assisted housing units. The attorney will:
- Represent tenants exercising their right to counsel under the Kansas City Ordinance.
- Represent subsidized HUD-assisted housing tenants during administrative meetings and hearings.
- Collect and evaluate evidence, draft legal documents such as answers, motions for summary judgment or to dismiss, affirmative defenses, and counterclaims.
- Negotiate settlement agreements and coordinate with rental assistance providers.
- Handle oral arguments and bench trials.
- Work efficiently with paralegals to manage case tasks.
- Collaborate with team members and partner agencies to cover hearings, create form templates, and develop uniform responses to issues affecting clients.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must possess an active Missouri Bar license or be eligible for licensure in Missouri through reciprocity. Additional qualifications include:
- Computer proficiency.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- A strong desire and commitment to deliver high-quality legal assistance.
- Ability to speak a second language is preferred but not required.
- Courtroom experience is preferred.
- Experience handling housing cases is preferred but not required.
Salary Information:
The base salary for the Staff Attorney position is $65,000, with the potential for a higher salary based on applicable experience.
