Job Title: Attorney III
Job Responsibilities:
The Attorney III position involves supervising and reviewing the work of staff attorneys, as well as performing organizational and administrative duties. The role is situated within the Public Defender's Office and is part of a team that collectively assists and defends the accused in **Members Only**. Attorneys in this role are appointed by the court to represent indigent persons in need of legal representation across various services, including criminal charges, probation matters, juvenile delinquency, dependency matters, mental health commitments, extradition cases, criminal appeals, and post-conviction relief. Essential functions of the job include analyzing, appraising, and organizing facts, evidence, and precedents, rendering logical, clear, and effective written reports and oral arguments, determining alternative courses of action, and presenting and arguing cases in court.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates for the Attorney III position must have graduated from an accredited law school and have admission to the State Bar of Arizona. A minimum of four years of relevant legal experience is required. Preferred qualifications include the ability to speak Spanish and/or having governmental experience, as well as experience in criminal, appellate, and/or dependency case law. The position also requires the candidate to possess and maintain a valid Arizona driver's license and the ability to be covered by county insurance.
Salary Information:
The anticipated hiring range for the Attorney III position is between $75,000 and $110,000 annually, dependent upon qualifications. The position also offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes membership in the Arizona State Retirement System.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
The Attorney III position requires thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of law, legal procedures and administrative proceedings, methods and practices of pleadings, judicial procedures, and the rules of evidence. The candidate should also have a considerable understanding of applying legal knowledge and training on behalf of public entities and principles and practices of management and supervision. Skills required include the ability to analyze, appraise, and organize facts, evidence, and precedents, render logical, clear, and effective written reports and oral arguments, determine alternative courses of action, and present and argue cases in court, handling unanticipated problems smoothly. The candidate should be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public, follow written and verbal instructions, read, write, and speak English, and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Work Environment:
The work is primarily performed under general supervision in a typical office or court setting with appropriate climate controls. The position requires light work, which involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently and lifting or carrying objects weighing up to 10 pounds. It requires a good deal of walking, standing, or involves sitting most of the time.
