Job Title: Civil Practice Legal Intern - Fall 2025
Job Responsibilities:
**Members Only**’s Civil Practice is offering non-paid internships in its various NYC Borough offices and specialized units for Fall 2025. Legal interns are tasked with assisting Civil Practice attorneys. These attorneys work to enhance the lives of low-income New Yorkers by assisting vulnerable families and individuals in obtaining and maintaining the basic necessities of life, including housing, health care, food, and subsistence income or self-sufficiency. The primary role of these attorneys is to enhance family and community stability and security by resolving a range of legal issues, including but not limited to anti-eviction, domestic violence, family law, immigration, employment, tax, health, elder law, HIV/AIDS, and consumer law problems.
Interns will work directly under the supervision of Civil Practice attorneys, with mandatory supervision being conducted. Students will have the opportunity to attend intern trainings, webinars, and Continuing Legal Education (CLE) relevant to their internship. Specific duties may include drafting motions, pleadings, memoranda of law, and affidavits; conducting legal research; attending court and administrative hearings with attorneys; assisting with client interviews; and performing other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must be current 2L or 3L law school students in good standing. While relevant clinical program or work experience is preferred, it is not a mandatory requirement. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to and interest in serving racially and socioeconomically oppressed communities. The ability to work collegially and collaboratively with all staff members is essential, as is the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines, and think critically. Fluency in languages other than English, particularly Spanish, is considered helpful but is not a requirement.
Salary Information:
The internship is non-paid. However, interns who meet certain eligibility criteria have the opportunity to receive a $1,000 stipend from the Howard Rossbach fund. This stipend was established in memory of Judge J. Howard Rossbach to encourage young lawyers' dedication to civic engagement through legal aid. The stipend, awarded through a lottery system, aims to support 4-5 interns annually who demonstrate financial need and lack funding for their internship at **Members Only**. To be considered for this stipend, interns must be enrolled as a degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate student at any accredited institution, complete the Howard Rossbach Internship Stipend Form at the time of submitting their internship application, be accepted to participate in an internship program at the organization, demonstrate financial need, lack funding for their internship, and submit a statement reflecting their strong interest in working at Legal Aid upon graduation. The stipend will be treated as taxable income.
Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion:
The leadership of **Members Only** is committed to a work culture of zealous advocacy, respect, diversity, and inclusion, client-oriented defense, access to justice, and excellent representation. The organization is dedicated to building a strong professional relationship with each client, understanding their diverse circumstances, and meeting their needs. The ability to achieve these goals depends on the efforts of all staff members.
