Job Responsibilities:
Interns working with the organization will engage in a variety of tasks that can change from day to day. Their responsibilities generally include:
- Interacting with constituents, helping to address their concerns and inquiries.
- Conducting legislative research to support the work of the office.
- Attending community events to represent the organization and gather information.
- Participating in committee hearings to gain insight into legislative processes.
- Preparing memos to summarize findings and provide recommendations.
- Drafting correspondence for communication with various stakeholders.
- Writing press clips to assist in the dissemination of information.
- Performing administrative work as assigned to help with the smooth operation of the office.
- Providing additional support as needed based on the demands of the office.
Interns in the Washington, DC office will be paired with a legislative staffer according to their stated areas of interest in policy. Applicants should detail these areas of interest in their cover letter to ensure appropriate placement.
Education and Experience Information:
- Internships are available to current undergraduate and graduate students, as well as recent college graduates.
- Preference is given to applicants with ties to the District and Californian residents, but all qualified candidates are encouraged to apply.
- Being bilingual in Spanish is considered an advantage.
Salary Information:
- Eligible interns will receive stipends.
- For interns based in the Washington, DC office, transit benefits are provided for use with services operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.
Additional Information:
Internships are structured around four sessions throughout the year, with specific deadlines for applications:
- Fall Session: September through December, with a deadline to apply by August 1st.
- Winter Session: January through March, with a deadline to apply by November 15th.
- Spring Session: February/March through April/May, with a deadline to apply by December 15th.
- Summer Session: June through August, with a deadline to apply by April 11th.
Working hours for the internships are typically Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, though there is flexibility to accommodate academic schedules.
