**Members Only** offers a comprehensive internship program that provides law students with hands-on experience in the practice of criminal law. Our interns and externs have the opportunity to work directly with experienced attorneys on felony, misdemeanor, and juvenile cases. This program is based primarily out of our Albuquerque office, but opportunities also exist at our other offices across the state.
As a law student intern or extern with the LOPD, you will be paired with a senior attorney who will provide training on court procedures and local practices. You will have the opportunity to perform complex legal work, prepare documents, take witness statements, and assist in the preparation of facts and legal references for litigation. This experience will give you valuable insight into the criminal defense process and provide you with practical skills that will benefit you in your future legal career.
Our internship program is open to law students during the fall, spring, and summer semesters. While we do not offer paid internships, we work closely with schools to allow students to earn credit while gaining valuable experience. We also accept students who are able to secure specialized funding through fellowships or other organizations.
One of the unique aspects of our internship program is the ability for law students to advocate directly for clients in court. This includes addressing the judge and speaking on behalf of clients in various court hearings. In order to enter an appearance in court, students must meet certain minimum requirements outlined in local rules. This includes receiving a passing grade in at least 30 semester hours of coursework, being familiar with the Rules of Professional Conduct, and obtaining a certificate from their dean specifying the time frame of their internship.
To apply for an internship or volunteer position with the LOPD, interested students must submit a full application via email. Application deadlines are on a rolling basis, with recommended deadlines listed for each semester. Interviews are typically conducted in person or over the phone, and we encourage students to apply early in order to secure an internship position.
