Title: Deputy State's Attorney

Job Responsibilities:
A Deputy State's Attorney (DSA) in the Orange County State’s Attorney’s Office is tasked with representing the State’s Attorney’s Office in prosecuting both criminal and certain civil offenses within Orange County. The role involves managing a substantial caseload effectively and may require assisting other offices as directed by the State’s Attorney or the Executive Director. The DSA is expected to collaborate efficiently with coworkers, law enforcement, community agencies, and other partners. They must pursue best practices, innovative approaches, and strive for positive outcomes within the justice system. Key responsibilities include accurately interpreting and applying statutes, rules, and regulations, handling a high volume of work, and maintaining confidentiality while ensuring accuracy and meeting deadlines. The role also involves data entry into the case management system and maintaining composure under stressful situations. Establishing effective working relationships and interacting respectfully with coworkers, supervisors, partner and community organizations, victims, and the public is crucial. The DSA must demonstrate empathy, emotional intelligence, and maturity, especially when dealing with victims of crime and other vulnerable populations.

Education and Experience Information:
The position requires a Juris Doctor (.) degree and admission to the Vermont Bar. Candidates who have read the law in Vermont and been admitted to the Vermont Bar are eligible to apply. Individuals pending bar results or admission to the Vermont bar may also be considered but must pass the bar and be admitted in Vermont within a reasonable timeframe as determined by the State’s Attorney to continue employment. Courtroom and jury trial experience is desirable, which can greatly benefit the candidate in performing their duties effectively.

Salary Information:
The Deputy State's Attorney position is covered by the SAS DSA pay plan, with a salary range from to per hour, depending on relevant legal experience. This range reflects the level of experience and expertise the candidate brings to the position.

Environmental Factors:
The position involves dealing with pressure from workload and deadlines, with work outside of the normal schedule regularly occurring. The candidate must have private means of transportation available to fulfill the job requirements effectively.
