Job Title: Assistant Law Clerk
Job Responsibilities:
Assistant Law Clerks are tasked with conducting comprehensive legal research and analysis on complex civil term motions. They are responsible for preparing memorandums, drafting orders, opinions, and verifying citations. These clerks work closely with Justices of the Supreme Court, particularly those in the Civil Term, and may also be appointed to Judges designated as Acting Supreme Court Justices, Appellate Divisions, Court of Appeals, and NYC Surrogate's Courts. The role involves a significant amount of interaction with attorneys and litigants, especially within the Guardianship Part of the Supreme Court, Kings County. This position focuses on protecting the rights of vulnerable individuals under Article 81 of the Mental Hygiene Law. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a high level of organization, a strong work ethic, and a keen interest in public interest, elder, or disability law.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must have graduated from an accredited law school no more than three years prior to appointment. Admission to the New York State Bar is required within eighteen months of appointment, or candidates must be appointed within three years of their first admission to any bar in the United States. This position offers a one-year clerkship, which is renewable up to four times. Assistant Law Clerks are personally appointed by the Justice they serve and work at the Justice's pleasure. The appointment to this role requires Judges to forego the appointment of a Secretary and waive the right to such an appointment under section 36 of the Judiciary Law for the period of service.
Salary Information:
The base salary for the position of Assistant Law Clerk is $84,659, with an additional location pay of $4,920.
General Information:
The role is situated in the Supreme Court, Kings County, under the Hon. Rachel E. Freier, within the Guardianship Part. The position is set to commence on July 31st, 2025. Although the position is currently available at a specific location, the appointee may be reassigned to any position in the same title within the promotion unit based on the needs of the Unified Court System. The announcement indicates that all applications received may be used to fill any vacancies in this title within the court or agency over the next six months.
