Job Title: Fall 2025 Law Clerk
Job Responsibilities:
Law clerks at the organization will be involved in a variety of responsibilities aimed at supporting the Post Conviction Defender's Division. The key duties include:
- Conducting legal research and analysis to assist in post conviction proceedings.
- Performing investigations related to cases.
- Writing legal memorandums, drafting post conviction petitions, and preparing motions for modification.
- Interviewing incarcerated clients both in prison and via video conference.
These positions offer hands-on experience, allowing law clerks to be fully integrated into trial teams. Clerks will collaborate with attorneys, investigators, paralegals, social workers, and other support staff to ensure comprehensive advocacy and representation for clients. The role involves significant research, writing, witness preparation, investigations, and trial preparation.
Education and Experience Information:
Applicants must be current law students or recent law school graduates. Qualified candidates should demonstrate:
- A commitment to zealous and comprehensive public defense.
- The ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- The capacity to work independently.
Law clerk opportunities are available during the spring semester (January-May), fall semester (September-December), and summer (May-August). Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
Salary Information:
These positions are unpaid volunteer roles. However, the organization supports externs seeking academic credit for their work and sponsors grant or other outside funding applications where applicable.

Interested candidates must complete an application and submit it via email, attaching the following documents: a resume, cover letter, list of four professional references, a writing sample no longer than 15 pages, and an undergraduate transcript. The email should indicate "Application for Fall 2025 Law Clerk" in the subject line. Application materials must be emailed within a few days of submitting the form, but no later than August 1, 2025. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
This is an in-person position, with a requirement for all students to start the clerkship by September 2, 2025, and work for at least 10 weeks. Law clerks are expected to commit to consistent days and hours for the duration of their clerkship, supporting the organization's mission for tenacious advocacy and zealous representation of clients.
