The ideal candidate will possess a . or equivalent degree, be admitted to practice law in the state of New Mexico, and have experience practicing in areas relevant to representing municipal entities. The Deputy City Attorney will work under the general direction of the City Attorney, providing a wide range of legal services to the municipality. This includes conducting legal research, drafting legal documents, and representing the city in various legal proceedings. The successful candidate must have a strong understanding of municipal law, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with city officials and departments.

The position requires a minimum of a . or equivalent degree, with no minimum experience practicing law. However, desirable experience includes at least one year of experience representing New Mexico municipal entities, as well as experience in a broad range of areas of law including open meetings, public records, government contracting, public procurement, labor and employee relations, civil rights, tort claims, land use, utilities, and criminal prosecution. The ideal candidate will also have experience drafting legal documents such as ordinances, resolutions, policies and procedures, contracts, and legal opinions.

The successful candidate must be admitted to practice law in the state of New Mexico by the date of hire, or no later than six months after. They must also possess a valid driver's license and active membership in the State Bar of New Mexico. Academic background, performance, standing, and related credentials or awards will also be considered.

The Deputy City Attorney will work closely with outside legal counsel, provide support to the City Attorney, and collaborate with other city officials and departments. They must also coordinate activities with outside agencies and organizations.
