Job Title: Fall 2025 Law Clerk
Job Responsibilities:
- Volunteers will support the Legislative Affairs team in the Maryland Legislature to advocate for justice reform, accountability, and reduction of mass incarceration.
- Key legislative priorities include early release for older or unhealthy incarcerated individuals, juvenile system treatment for youthful defenders, and marijuana decriminalization.
- Additional focus areas include mental health care improvement, parental rights protection, police reform, forensics analysis, and immigration system reform.
- Law clerks will research relevant legislative issues, draft memoranda and testimonies for bills, and engage in supervised legislative advocacy.
- Responsibilities include developing public support for bills, identifying potential witnesses, and preparing their written and oral statements.
- Law clerks will assist in providing comprehensive advocacy, working closely with attorneys, investigators, paralegals, social workers, and support staff.
- Tasks involve significant research and writing, witness preparation, investigations, and trial preparation.
Education and Experience Information:
- Current law students or recent law school graduates are eligible to apply.
- Positions are available for 1L, 2L, and 3L law students.
- Law clerks join the organization three times a year: summer, spring, and fall.
- The position offers hands-on experience in client-centered and team-based representation.
- Law clerks are fully integrated into trial teams, providing an unparalleled experience in legal advocacy.
Salary Information:
- These positions are unpaid volunteer roles.
- The organization supports externs seeking academic credits for their work and sponsors grant or other outside funding applications.
Application Process:
- Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with final selections made by individual Parental Defense offices.
- Candidates need to specify their office placement preferences across the State of Maryland.
- The Montgomery County and Baltimore City offices are accessible via public transportation.
- Applicants must submit the following materials via email: resume, cover letter, list of four professional references, a writing sample (no longer than 15 pages), and an undergraduate transcript.
- Applications must be completed by August 1, 2025.
- The position requires an in-person commitment, starting by September 2, 2025, for at least 10 weeks.
- Law clerks are expected to commit to consistent days and hours throughout the clerkship.
