Job Title: Civil Practice Legal Intern - Fall 2025
Job Responsibilities:
The Civil Practice Legal Intern at the organization will assist Civil Practice attorneys in various NYC Borough offices and specialized units. The primary responsibility of the intern is to aid attorneys in improving the lives of low-income individuals and families by helping them secure essential life necessities such as housing, health care, food, and income. This role involves enhancing family and community stability by addressing a wide range of legal issues, including but not limited to anti-eviction, domestic violence, family law, immigration, employment, tax, health, elder law, HIV/AIDS, and consumer law issues. Interns will work under mandatory supervision and have opportunities to attend intern training, webinars, and Continuing Legal Education (CLE) sessions relevant to their internship.
Specific duties include:
- Drafting motions, pleadings, memoranda of law, and affidavits.
- Conducting legal research.
- Attending court and administrative hearings with attorneys.
- Assisting with client interviews.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Information:
Applicants must be current 2L or 3L law school students in good standing. While relevant clinical program or work experience is preferred, it is not required. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to serving racially and socioeconomically oppressed communities. They should have the ability to work collegially and collaboratively with all staff members, manage multiple tasks and deadlines, and think critically. Fluency in languages besides English, particularly Spanish, is helpful but not required.
Salary Information:
The internship is unpaid; however, interns who meet eligibility criteria have the opportunity to receive a $1,000 stipend from the Howard Rossbach fund. This stipend, awarded through a lottery system, is intended to support 4-5 interns annually who demonstrate financial need and lack funding for their internship at the organization. To be eligible for the stipend, applicants must:
- Be enrolled as a degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate student at any accredited institution.
- Complete the Howard Rossbach Internship Stipend Form at the time of submitting their internship application.
- Be accepted to participate in an internship program at the organization.
- Demonstrate financial need and lack funding for their internship.
- Submit a statement reflecting a strong interest in working at the organization upon graduation.
Application Process:
All applications must be completed online through the organization’s Careers Page. The application deadline is specified in the internship description. For the stipend application, candidates must fill out the stipend form during the submission of their internship application. Only one application per applicant per year is permitted. If more than 4 or 5 applicants are eligible, recipients will be selected by lottery. Selected interns will be notified prior to the start of their internships. The stipend will be treated as taxable income.
