Job Title: Kinship Care / Family Law Attorney
Job Responsibilities:
1. Provide counsel and advice to family violence survivors via the Family Law Hotline on a comprehensive range of family law legal options, including divorce, custody, visitation, child support, paternity-defense, legitimation, name changes, protective orders, and assistance with financial benefits, housing, and education.
2. Offer civil legal representation to survivors of family violence, managing cases in state, federal, and administrative forums as directed by the supervisor or Piedmont Managing attorney.
3. Refer clients requiring immigration assistance, such as T-Visas, U-Visas, and VAWA applications, to partners, the Georgian Asylum and Immigration Network (GAIN), or other immigration resources.
4. Guide clients to other holistic services, including safety planning, shelter, law enforcement assistance, victim support, counseling, benefits, and community services to enhance safety and economic security.
5. Maintain records and data on the organization's case management system for research, development, and project activity reporting.
6. Assist in recruiting and supporting pro bono attorneys, in collaboration with the pro bono unit, to aid survivors with their legal needs.
7. Conduct presentations to bar associations, attorneys, and community partners to promote the development and participation in holistic civil legal services for survivors.
8. Attend statewide and national meetings and conferences as allowed by budget and grant requirements.
9. Support the application of technology in delivering legal services; engage in discussions and propose policy recommendations on using technology to expand access to civil legal services for survivors.
10. Engage in multicultural outreach to inform survivors about the organization's legal services available throughout Georgia.
11. Provide grant support regarding family law grants, including administrative assistance, drafting, budget monitoring, grant reporting, and supervision of grant attorneys and staff as needed by the project manager.
Education and Experience Information:
- Graduate of an accredited law school.
- Current member of the Georgia Bar.
- Experience working with individuals with low incomes and a commitment to social justice.
- Willingness to work as part of a team in a collaborative and professional manner.
- Computer literacy, including familiarity with email, Excel, Word, SharePoint, LegalServer, and other programs.
- Reliable transportation and a valid Georgia driver's license, as travel is part of the position.
- Spanish language skills are highly valued.
- Demonstrated interest or experience working with low-income clients on poverty law issues and commitment to social justice.
- Capacity to work with diverse populations, backgrounds, and perspectives.
- Excellent oral advocacy, research, and writing skills.
- Attention to detail and self-motivation.
- Creativity and ability to be a team player.
Salary Information:
The salary for this position is $65,000 or more, depending on experience. The organization provides generous fringe benefits, including paid holidays, paid time off with parental leave, a birthday holiday, health, life, and long and short-term disability insurance, educational loan reimbursement up to $600 per month (after a $65 per month deductible), and a 403B with a 3% match. The organization covers Georgia Bar dues and CLE expenses. Additionally, the organization offers a hybrid work schedule permitting staff to work remotely for two days, subject to management approval and a probationary employment period.
