Job Title: Civil Practice Legal Intern - Fall 2025

Job Responsibilities:
The Civil Practice Legal Intern will work directly under the supervision of Civil Practice attorneys at the organization. The role involves assisting attorneys who are focused on improving the lives of low-income individuals and families in New York City by helping them secure basic necessities such as housing, healthcare, food, and income. The attorneys aim to enhance family and community stability by resolving various legal issues, including anti-eviction, domestic violence, family law, immigration, employment, tax, health, elder law, HIV/AIDS, and consumer law issues.

Interns will be involved in drafting motions, pleadings, memoranda of law, and affidavits. They will conduct legal research, attend court and administrative hearings with attorneys, assist with client interviews, and perform other duties as assigned. Interns will also participate in mandatory supervision, intern training sessions, webinars, and Continuing Legal Education (CLE) relevant to their internship.

Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must be current 2L or 3L law school students in good standing. While relevant clinical program experience or work experience is preferred, it is not required. Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to serving racially and socioeconomically oppressed communities and possess the ability to work collaboratively with all staff members. They should be capable of managing multiple tasks and deadlines while thinking critically. Fluency in languages other than English, particularly Spanish, is helpful but not required.

Salary Information:
The internship is non-paid; however, eligible interns have an opportunity to receive a $1,000 stipend from the Howard Rossbach fund. This stipend is awarded through a lottery system to 4-5 interns annually who demonstrate financial need and lack funding for their internship. To qualify for this stipend, applicants must be enrolled as degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate students at any accredited institution and must complete the Howard Rossbach Internship Stipend Form when submitting their internship application. The stipend will be treated as taxable income.

Additional Information:
The organization is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, fostering a work culture of zealous advocacy, respect, and client-oriented defense. The organization prohibits discriminatory employment actions against and treatment of its employees and applicants based on various protected characteristics.
