Job Title: High School Intern
Job Responsibilities:
- Participate in weekly video conferences to engage in various projects throughout the internship.
- Conduct peer surveys and attend community meetings to gather information and insights.
- Track how federal legislation impacts local communities and propose actions on important issues.
- Organize and participate in student town halls to discuss relevant topics.
- Complete tasks and assignments using online tools and communication methods outside of school hours.
Education and Experience Information:
- Open to public, private, charter, and homeschool students in the state of Hawaii.
- Applicants must have a GPA of or better.
- Strong preference given to students in their final year of high school, though underclassmen may apply after contacting the office.
- No prior student government experience is required.
- Interns are selected based on community involvement and diversity of interests.
Salary Information:
- Not applicable; this is an unpaid internship.
Additional Information:
- The internship runs from late September to April, and interns must commit to the full term.
- The internship is virtual, allowing students from all islands to participate.
- Students must have personal access to email throughout the internship.
- Some activities may be prohibited due to potential conflicts, such as working for other elected officials, direct lobbying, or publishing articles in the intern's name.
- Participation in advocacy groups is allowed if the intern is not the spokesperson and has a behind-the-scenes role.
- Applications for the 2025-26 program are due by 12:00 PM Hawaiian-Aleutian time on August 20, 2025.
- Both the questionnaire and checklist must be submitted for the application to be considered complete.
- Late applications will not be accepted, and questions received after 5:00 PM on August 18 will not be answered before the deadline.
