Job Title: Deputy Director, Legal (Threat Assessment)

Job Responsibilities:
The Deputy Director, Legal plays a pivotal role in leading and collaborating with the legal and other departmental staff within the organization to advance programmatic work aligned with the organization’s strategic framework. This position is integral in strategizing and executing litigation and legal advocacy strategies. Key responsibilities include:

- Supporting the Legal Director and litigation staff in crafting and executing litigation and legal advocacy strategies that integrate narrative change, movement power building, and campaign strategies.
- Collaborating with the Policy and other Advocacy Departments to develop and execute the organization’s law and policy work to ensure maximum impact.
- Leading litigation teams in developing and conducting impact litigation on various issues. Responsibilities include preparing pleadings, motions, and briefs; conducting discovery; presenting oral arguments; and handling appeals.
- Overseeing and advancing plaintiff-driven, community-grounded impact litigation in conjunction with the organization’s core strategies.
- Identifying potential new cases and developing those cases or working with others across the organization to do so.
- Serving as a legal and litigation expert in coalitions with external partners.
- Providing legal analysis and technical assistance to colleagues, government officials, media, and advocates nationwide.
- Representing the organization in media about relevant legal work and litigation.

Management, Leadership, and Supervision:
The Deputy Director, Legal is responsible for supervising, supporting, and mentoring staff attorneys and fellows. Key duties include:

- Participating in leadership and management of the Legal Department, including project management, skills development, and team support.
- Supervising and mentoring staff in the development of litigation skills and professional skills.
- Leading effective case teams and promoting a team-oriented approach.
- Collaborating with staff across the organization to support ongoing programmatic work.
- Reporting to leadership about programmatic developments and collaborating on constructive solutions.
- Managing employee work schedules and assignments.
- Providing insights to workgroups and leaders to better assign work tasks and projects.
- Assisting in managing the quarterly Board reporting process.
- Developing, tracking, and revising the departmental budget.
- Partnering with Development and Finance Departments to support grant applications and reporting.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Supporting recruitment, interviewing, and hiring of staff and overseeing onboarding and training.
- Overseeing the daily workflow of direct reports.
- Acting as a coach and mentor, providing constructive feedback to foster a collaborative environment.
- Managing performance issues in accordance with organizational policy.
- Directly managing employees and potentially additional staff.
- Managing outside consultants, third-party administrators, and vendors.

Education and Experience Information:
- JD degree and active membership in good standing of a State Bar Association are required.
- A minimum of 8 years of litigation experience, with at least 6 years in complex federal civil litigation, and 4 years of people management experience.
- Demonstrated experience in the investigation, development, and litigation of impact cases.
- Proven success in leading case teams and supervising or mentoring other attorneys, fellows, and interns.
- Proficiency with in-office and virtual environments and software such as MS Office and virtual collaboration tools.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Expertise in civil rights or anti-discrimination law, federal class action litigation, or another substantive area of law impacting low-income immigrants is strongly preferred.
- Proficiency in non-English languages spoken by diverse communities is preferred, with fluency in more than one language desirable.

Salary Information:
The salary range for this role is $111,800 - $139,800. The organization's compensation and benefits philosophy aims to provide a competitive offering in the nonprofit sector and ensure equity across the organization.

Additional Information:
- Up to 30% of overnight interstate travel may be required, generally on a quarterly basis to the Washington, . office or another location within the . for 3-5 nights.
- Remote work locations include various states, and applicants must reside in one of the specified locations to be considered.
- The role is not part of the bargaining unit.
