Job Title: Fall 2025 Law Clerk

Job Responsibilities:
Law clerks at the organization will join the Legislative Affairs team to support legislative initiatives aimed at justice reform in the Maryland Legislature. Their responsibilities include:
- Supporting bills that focus on early release of older or ill incarcerated persons, treating youthful offenders within the juvenile system, and decriminalizing marijuana.
- Contributing to initiatives that aim to improve mental health care, protect parental rights, reform police practices, enhance forensic analysis, and reform the immigration system.
- Conducting research on relevant legislative issues and drafting memoranda and testimonies in support of bills.
- Engaging in supervised legislative advocacy, which includes developing public support for bills, identifying potential witnesses, and preparing written statements and oral advocacy.
- Attending hearings in Annapolis when the Maryland General Assembly is in session, although much of the work can be done remotely.
- Working closely with attorneys, investigators, paralegals, social workers, and other support staff to provide comprehensive advocacy and ensure clients receive the best representation possible.
- Engaging in significant research and writing, witness preparation, investigations, and/or trial preparation as part of the trial teams.

Education and Experience Information:
- The position is open to current law students or recent law school graduates.
- Applicants are expected to be pursuing or have completed a law degree.
- The program offers hands-on experience for current law students to assist in client-centered and team-based representation.

Salary Information:
- These are unpaid volunteer positions. However, externs seeking credits for their work with the organization will be supported, and the organization will sponsor grant or other outside funding applications where applicable.

Additional Information:
- Law clerk opportunities are available during the spring semester (January-May), fall semester (September-December), and summer (May-August).
- Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, and candidates can join the organization three times a year: summer, spring, and fall.
- The application process is centralized, but final selections are made by individual Parental Defense offices. Candidates should specify their preferred placement locations, noting that only the Montgomery County and Baltimore City offices are accessible via public transportation.
- Application materials must include a resume, cover letter, list of four professional references, a writing sample no longer than 15 pages, and an undergraduate transcript. These must be submitted by email no later than August 1, 2025.
- The clerkship is an in-person position, requiring a minimum commitment of 10 weeks starting by September 2, 2025.
- Law clerks are expected to commit to consistent days and hours for the duration of the clerkship, supporting the organization's mission for tenacious advocacy and zealous representation of clients.
