Job Title: Assistant Law Clerk
Job Responsibilities:
The Assistant Law Clerk position within the department is primarily focused on supporting an Acting Justice of the Supreme Court, New York County, Civil Term, specifically in a specialized part centered on matrimonial dissolution. Key responsibilities include:
- Providing support and assistance to the Justice as required.
- Conducting research and analysis of complex legal issues including equitable distribution, child custody, child support, spousal maintenance, counsel fees, and other matrimonial law matters.
- Drafting orders, opinions, and correspondence.
- Scheduling and conducting compliance, status, and settlement conferences.
- Assisting the Justice during bench trials and advising on legal issues.
- Supervising legal interns and externs.
- Responding to telephone calls and other communications to chambers.
- Processing orders, opinions, and correspondence.
- Monitoring the court's docket and coordinating ADR referrals and administrative reports.
- Performing necessary administrative and clerical duties for the functioning of Chambers.
- Engaging in respectful and substantial in-person, telephone, and e-mail contact with counsel and self-represented litigants.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must have graduated from an accredited law school no more than three years prior to appointment and must be admitted to the New York State Bar within eighteen months of appointment. Alternatively, candidates may be appointed within three years of their first admission to any bar in the United States.
Salary Information:
The base salary for the Assistant Law Clerk position is $84,659, with an additional location pay of $4,920.
Additional Information:
Assistant Law Clerks are appointed for a one-year clerkship, which is renewable up to four times. They are personally appointed by the Justice they work for and serve at their pleasure. Judges appointing an Assistant Law Clerk agree to forego the appointment of a Secretary and waive the right to such an appointment under section 36 of the Judiciary Law for the duration of the Assistant Law Clerk's service.
