Job Title: Fall 2025 Law Clerk
Job Responsibilities:
- Support the Legislative Affairs team in advocating for bills in the Maryland Legislature aimed at improving justice, enhancing accountability, and reducing mass incarceration.
- Focus areas include early release of older or health-compromised incarcerated individuals, juvenile treatment for youthful offenders, and decriminalization of marijuana.
- Assist in efforts to improve mental health care, protect parental rights, and reform police, forensic analysis, and immigration systems.
- Conduct research on relevant issues and draft memoranda and testimonies to support legislative bills.
- Engage in supervised legislative advocacy, develop public support for bills, identify potential witnesses, and prepare written statements and oral advocacy.
- Participate in hearings in Annapolis when the Maryland General Assembly is in session.
- Provide comprehensive advocacy by integrating fully into trial teams, working closely with attorneys, investigators, paralegals, social workers, and other support staff.
- Engage in significant research and writing, witness preparation, investigations, and/or trial preparation.
Education and Experience Information:
- Current law school students or recent law school graduates are eligible to apply.
- Applicants must be enrolled in law school as 1L, 2L, or 3L students.
Salary Information:
- These are unpaid volunteer positions.
- The organization will support externs seeking credits for their work and sponsor grant or other outside funding applications if applicable.
Additional Information:
- Law clerk opportunities are available during the spring semester (January-May), fall semester (September-December), and summer (May-August).
- Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but must be submitted by August 1, 2025, for the fall semester.
- The position is in-person, with a start date by September 2, 2025, and requires a minimum 10-week commitment.
- The application process involves submitting a resume, cover letter, list of four professional references, a writing sample no longer than 15 pages, and an undergraduate transcript.
- Placement decisions are made based on candidates' preferences, and only Montgomery County and Baltimore City offices are accessible via public transportation.
