The Department of the Interior (DOI) is seeking dedicated law students for their Legal Internship Program at the Office of the Solicitor. As a legal intern, you will have the opportunity to work with nearly 200 practicing attorneys in the headquarters office and more than 300 attorneys nationwide. The DOI's mission makes it the Nation's premier conservation agency, and the work they do affects the lives of millions of people.
The Legal Internship Program is open to current students enrolled in accredited educational institutions from high school to graduate level. This includes internships, pathways, and other student programs. The program is also open to current 1L, 2L, and LLM students enrolled in an ABA-accredited educational institution in a Juris Doctorate or LLM program. Native American candidates are strongly encouraged to apply, as the DOI has unique responsibilities to support the Department's programs to benefit American Indians and Alaska Natives.
As a legal intern, you will have the opportunity to conduct legal research on a variety of environmental and administrative law issues, as well as issues involving Indian law. You will also have the chance to draft legal memoranda, briefs, and motions, and assist with discovery in active federal cases. Additionally, you may participate in conference calls and strategy sessions with other agency counsel and attend hearings and meetings in the Washington, . area.
This is a volunteer position and does not qualify for benefits, but students may receive academic credit if their law schools allow it. The Legal Internship Program is open on an ongoing basis, with scheduled closing dates for specific semesters. Applicants must be . Citizens or . Nationals and must be able to successfully pass a background investigation.
