The primary responsibilities include assisting attorneys in improving the lives of low-income individuals by addressing legal issues related to housing, healthcare, food, and subsistence income. Interns will be involved in resolving a range of legal problems, such as anti-eviction, domestic violence, family law, immigration, employment, tax, health, elder law, HIV/AIDS, and consumer law issues. Specific duties may include drafting motions, pleadings, memoranda of law, and affidavits; conducting legal research; attending court and administrative hearings with attorneys; assisting with client interviews; and performing other duties as assigned. Interns will also have the opportunity to attend intern trainings, webinars, and CLE’s relevant to their internship.

While relevant clinical program or work experience is preferred, it is not required. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to and interest in serving racially and socioeconomically oppressed communities. The ability to work collegially and collaboratively with all staff members is essential. Interns must have the ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and think critically. Fluency in languages besides English, particularly Spanish, is helpful but not required.
Salary Information:
The internship is non-paid; however, interns who meet eligibility criteria have an opportunity to receive a $1,000 stipend from the Howard Rossbach fund. This stipend, awarded through a lottery system, supports 4-5 interns annually who demonstrate financial need and lack funding for their internship at the organization. To be considered for this stipend, interns must be enrolled as degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate students at any accredited institution, complete the Howard Rossbach Internship Stipend Form at the time of submitting their internship application, be accepted to participate in an internship program at the organization, demonstrate financial need, and lack funding for their internship. The stipend will be treated as taxable income.
The organization is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and prohibits discriminatory employment actions against and treatment of its employees and applicants based on various protected characteristics. Applicants are required to submit a cover letter and resume as a single combined PDF when applying via the organization's Recruitment Portal.
