Associate Staff Counsel
Job Responsibilities
Litigation Execution: The Associate Staff Counsel is responsible for managing all phases of litigation, including discovery, hearings, trials, mediations, and drafting legal documents such as pleadings and motions. The role involves supporting Senior Trial Counsel and Senior Litigation Counsel in all aspects of case handling through trial, including preparation, management, and assistance at every stage of the litigation process.
Client Advisory and Relationship Management: The position requires providing clear and reasoned legal opinions and strategic advice to Claims Representatives and insured clients. The Associate Staff Counsel is expected to develop and maintain strong client relationships through transparent and effective communication.
Technology Utilization: The role involves utilizing e-discovery and case management technologies to streamline legal processes, improve efficiency, and reduce operational costs. The candidate must demonstrate effective coordination with remote team members and proficiency in remote work settings.
Risk Evaluation and Case Resolution Facilitation: The Associate Staff Counsel is tasked with identifying, evaluating, and collaborating on strategies to mitigate legal risks, working closely with clients and senior counsel to facilitate effective resolutions.
Documentation Accuracy and Compliance: Ensuring all legal documents, pleadings, and motions are meticulously prepared, accurate, and compliant with applicable standards and client expectations is a key responsibility.
Timely Client Communication: The role requires providing clear, consistent, and timely updates and recommendations to insured clients and claims professionals to maintain alignment with case objectives.
Contribution to Organizational Improvement: The candidate is expected to participate in initiatives aimed at enhancing efficiency, effectiveness, and best practices within Staff Legal and Global Legal & Compliance organizations.
Ethical Compliance Adherence: Upholding the highest standards of legal ethics and compliance, following legal regulations and licensing requirements, and promoting a culture of integrity within the legal team are crucial responsibilities.
Education and Experience Information
Juris Doctor (JD) or LLB degree from an accredited law school is required. Admission to the bar in Oregon and in good standing is necessary, with additional admission to Washington State being beneficial. Special licenses to practice before particular boards or federal courts may be required. The candidate should have general knowledge of insurance law, and as necessary, workers’ compensation and/or No Fault law. Proficiency in e-discovery, case management systems, and basic legal analysis tools is expected. Strong analytical, research, and legal writing skills are essential. The candidate should possess basic knowledge of negotiation techniques including preparation, active listening, and problem-solving. Demonstrated ability to manage cases from start to finish under supervision is required. Effective communication and persuasion skills, both written and oral, are important. The ability to collaborate with clients, claims professionals, and senior attorneys is necessary. The candidate should be organized, process-oriented with strong time management skills.
Salary Information
The minimum salary for the Associate Staff Counsel position is USD $94, per year, and the maximum salary is USD $161, per year. The typical starting salary ranges from $110,000 to $128,000. The position offers flexible time off with an annual accrual of 20 days.
