Job Title: Civil Practice Legal Intern - Fall 2025
Job Responsibilities:
The Legal Aid Society’s Civil Practice provides non-paid internships for Fall 2025 across its NYC Borough offices and specialized units. Legal interns will assist Civil Practice attorneys in improving the lives of low-income New Yorkers by helping vulnerable families and individuals secure basic needs such as housing, healthcare, food, and income for self-sufficiency. The attorneys address a wide range of legal issues, including but not limited to anti-eviction, domestic violence, family law, immigration, employment, tax, health, elder law, HIV/AIDS, and consumer law issues.
Interns will work directly under the supervision of Civil Practice attorneys. Mandatory supervision will be conducted. They will have the opportunity to attend intern trainings, webinars, and Continuing Legal Education (CLE) sessions relevant to their internship. Duties may include drafting motions, pleadings, memoranda of law, and affidavits; conducting legal research; attending court and administrative hearings with attorneys; assisting with client interviews; and other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Information:
Candidates must be current 2L or 3L law school students in good standing. While relevant clinical program or work experience is preferred, it is not required. Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to and interest in serving racially and socioeconomically oppressed communities. The ability to work collegially and collaboratively with all staff members and to manage multiple tasks, deadlines, and think critically is essential. Fluency in languages other than English, particularly Spanish, is helpful but not required.
Stipends & Benefits:
Interns who meet the eligibility criteria may receive a $1,000 stipend from the Howard Rossbach fund, established in memory of Judge J. Howard Rossbach. This stipend is awarded through a lottery system to support 4-5 interns annually who demonstrate financial need and lack funding for their internship at **Members Only** To be considered, interns must be enrolled as a degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited institution, complete the Howard Rossbach Internship Stipend Form when submitting their internship application, be accepted into an internship program at the Legal Aid Society, demonstrate financial need, and submit a statement reflecting their strong interest in working at Legal Aid upon graduation. The stipend will be treated as taxable income.
