Job Responsibilities
- Advise business and product teams on legal and regulatory requirements applicable to prepaid balances, loyalty points, payments, and e-commerce.
- Provide legal advice for the international expansion of the company’s digital storefronts (both PC and mobile) and related services, including licensing requirements and local compliance considerations.
- Monitor legal and regulatory developments in the payments industry, advising on their impact and ensuring the company's compliance with these regulations. Liaise with regulators on issues related to compliance with local laws.
- Advise on the structuring of payment flows for both pay-ins and payouts.
- Carry out a legal risk assessment in relation to fraud prevention, anti-money laundering (AML), and liability allocation.
- Act as a liaison among Legal, Compliance, Business, Product Development, and Operations teams to ensure alignment on payment-related legal and regulatory matters.
- Collaborate with outside counsels, subject matter expert counsels, and stakeholders on Regulatory, Compliance, Privacy, Trust and Safety, and Litigation teams. Supervise and execute the implementation of advice in the company's products.
- Participate in escalation, strategy, and planning discussions with the company's leadership.
Education and Experience Information
- Licensed in good standing to practice law.
- 5+ years of legal experience, including 3+ years of relevant experience focused on e-commerce, payments, fintech, and digital marketplaces. In-house experience at a fast-paced technology company is preferred.
- Knowledge of Payment Services Directive 2 (PSD2), Anti-Money Laundering Directive (AMLD), General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Card Scheme Rules, and related regulatory frameworks governing payment services, prepaid access instruments, e-money, and money service businesses.
- Understanding of digital storefronts and alternative mobile app stores.
- Familiarity with legal issues related to virtual in-game currency.
- Proven experience advising on wallets, prepaid balances, loyalty points, and payments.
- Strong issue-spotting skills; agile in prioritizing and meeting deadlines.
- Tech-savvy with hands-on experience working with legal technology and legal technologists to drive process and efficiency in an in-house legal department.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to operate autonomously as a legal generalist and as an expert in payments and e-commerce while exercising good judgment about escalation and collaboration.

The expected annual base pay range(s) for this position vary by location:
- New York City Base Pay Range: $199,625—$292,783 USD
- California Base Pay Range: $199,625—$292,783 USD
- Washington Base Pay Range: $195,466—$286,683 USD
Compensation varies based on factors such as skills and competencies, qualifications, knowledge, and experience. In addition to base pay, most employees are eligible to participate in the company's generous benefit plans and discretionary incentive programs, subject to the terms of those plans or programs.
