Head of Construction Defect Claims

Job Responsibilities

The Head of Construction Defect Claims at the company will lead a large team responsible for handling all aspects of construction defect claims. This role requires a thorough understanding of the business and best-in-class claims handling practices. Key responsibilities include:

- Developing and managing the performance of the Construction Defect (CD) Claim teams to ensure quality, accuracy, and timely resolution of complex and severe liability claims.
- Continuously developing talent by creating opportunities for direct reports to grow and acquire new skills.
- Monitoring team performance, analyzing problematic trends to identify root causes, and escalating issues or recommending solutions to operational leadership.
- Advocating a culture committed to identifying process efficiencies to improve work completion.
- Demonstrating a passion for creating a highly effective and engaged employee culture by selecting top talent, providing continuous coaching, recognizing employees to reinforce service excellence behaviors, and holding others accountable for team development.
- Promoting claims customer service excellence by understanding and exceeding stakeholders’ expectations.
- Identifying changes in claim best practices and workflows to drive high-quality outcomes and developing training solutions to embed and sustain those practices in the organization.
- Identifying technological changes to support the execution of practices and workflows, and collaborating with IT counterparts in the design, build, and testing of those changes.
- Utilizing data and analytics to make informed decisions and drive continuous improvement.
- Collaborating with internal and external business partners to ensure profitable growth.
- Developing coverage acumen and proactively ensuring team management of litigation.

Education and Experience Information

Candidates for the Head of Construction Defect Claims position should possess the following qualifications and experience:

- Significant experience in claims leadership roles within the insurance industry, with substantial experience in Construction Defect claim management.
- Expertise in managing claims across multiple jurisdictions.
- A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience is required.
- An advanced degree, such as a Juris Doctor (.), is preferred.
- Ability to manage a diverse group of claims teams located in multiple locations.
- Experience in directly managing and guiding a team of managers responsible for overseeing the handling of all aspects of claims.
- Regular participation in claims roundtable discussions focusing on coverage, liability, and assessment of damages.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to present to senior leadership.
- Leadership skills, including the ability to plan, organize, delegate, and develop direct reports.
- Ability to persuade and influence others through superior written and oral communications; effectively explaining concepts, challenging ideas, and arguing in favor of one's point of view.
- Possession of emotional intelligence and self-awareness.
- Embrace of change and openness to feedback related to performance, dealing constructively with criticism.
