Overview of the Positions
The Post Conviction Defender's Division within the organization is committed to ensuring fairness in criminal convictions and safeguarding the integrity of the criminal justice system. The division represents indigent inmates at post-conviction proceedings throughout the State of Maryland.
Job Responsibilities
Law Clerks serving with the Post Conviction Defender's Division will be responsible for:
- Conducting legal research and analysis
- Performing investigations
- Writing legal memorandums, post-conviction petitions, and motions for modification
- Interviewing incarcerated clients in prison and via video conference
Education and Experience Information
Qualified applicants must demonstrate:
- A commitment to zealous and comprehensive public defense
- The ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
- The ability to work independently

APPLICATION PROCESS
Applications are submitted through a centralized process, but final selections are made by the Post Conviction Defender's Division. All applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Law clerks join the organization three times a year: spring, summer, and fall. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis through a centralized process, with final selections made by the district offices. During the application process, candidates indicate which offices they are interested in being considered for, and final placement decisions are made consistent with the candidate's preferences. It is important to note that the organization has offices throughout the State of Maryland, and the more specific candidates can be regarding placement, the better. Also, only the Montgomery County and Baltimore City offices are accessible via public transportation.
Law students
The organization offers a hands-on experience for current law students to assist in the client-centered and team-based representation of clients. This unparalleled experience allows law clerks to assist in providing comprehensive advocacy. Law clerks are fully integrated into trial teams and work closely with attorneys, investigators, paralegals, social workers, and other support staff to ensure clients receive the best representation possible. Law clerks typically engage in significant research and writing, witness preparation, investigations, and/or trial preparation. Opportunities may be virtual or modified due to the ongoing pandemic.
These are unpaid volunteer positions; however, where applicable, the organization will support externs seeking credits for their work as well as sponsor grant or other outside funding applications. Law clerk opportunities exist during the spring semester (January-May), fall semester (September-December), and summer (May-August). Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
