Position Title

AmeriCorps Legal Assistant

Job Overview

The Access to Justice Project, a partnership between LawNY® and AmeriCorps, is seeking a dedicated and passionate Legal Assistant to join their team in Elmira, NY. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on legal experience while making a positive impact on low-income and vulnerable populations. The successful candidate will have the option to serve a 6 month or 1 year term and will receive a bi-weekly living allowance, educational award, and other benefits.

Responsibilities and Duties

- Conduct intake and screening for low-income individuals seeking civil legal assistance
- Recruit and support volunteer lawyers, students, and community members
- Assist staff attorneys in providing legal services to clients
- Collaborate with community agencies serving low-income populations
- Conduct outreach and community education for targeted groups
- Participate in program committees and work groups
- Work on impact cases or projects

Qualifications

- Minimum of two years of college or equivalent experience
- Experience working with low-income populations preferred

Benefits

- Bi-weekly living allowance of $1,000
- Educational award of $3, for 6 months or $6, for 1 year
- Aid in obtaining basic health coverage, housing and food assistance, childcare expenses, and deferment of student loans
