If so, then the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) invites you to apply for our Supervising Attorney position with the Detention and Deportation Defense Initiative (DDDI).

As a Supervising Attorney, you will play a crucial role in providing representation for low-income, unrepresented immigrant detainees before the Elizabeth, Newark, and other Immigration Courts, as well as the Board of Immigration Appeals and federal District Courts and Courts of Appeals. You will also have the opportunity to mentor and supervise staff attorneys, senior staff attorneys, and legal assistants, as well as participate in statewide and nationwide advocacy activities.

Key Responsibilities:

- Provide legal representation and consultations to immigrant detainees facing removal
- Train, supervise, and support AFSC staff attorneys and legal assistants
- Manage caseload and maintain client files
- Participate in meetings with government representatives and service providers
- Monitor conditions and access at detention centers and jails
- Compile reports on case representation and advocacy activities
- Conduct presentations on immigration and detention issues
- Respond to media inquiries
- Attend staff meetings and case reviews

Minimum Qualifications:

- Admission to a state bar
- Minimum of 5 years' experience with immigration law and procedures, especially removal defense
- Excellent legal skills and understanding of movement lawyering principles
- Bilingual in English/Spanish or English/French highly desirable
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and well-organized
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse individuals and build respectful relationships
- Familiarity with software applications
- Ability to work some evenings and weekends and travel out of state

Other Required Skills and Abilities:
