Description:

The . Pro Se Clinic, a legal clinic for pro se litigants in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, is seeking a Temp-to-Perm Staff Attorney. This position offers a unique opportunity to provide direct legal assistance to self-represented individuals in federal court and to work with a diverse pro se litigant population. The selected attorney will also have the potential to transition into a permanent role contingent on grant renewal in October 2024.

Responsibilities:

- Staff the . Pro Se Clinic and provide direct legal assistance to pro se litigants
- Screen pro se litigants for services and make appropriate referrals
- Conduct interviews, factual investigation, legal analysis, and research
- Review, edit, and draft legal documents
- Maintain files and work product
- Mentor law students, volunteers, and pro bono attorneys
- Develop resources and tools to assist pro se litigants
- Foster a productive relationship with courthouse staff
- Keep abreast of relevant laws and procedures
- Any other duties related to Clinic operations

Qualifications:

- Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school
- Member in good standing of the New York State Bar
- Admitted to practice in the . District Court for the Southern District of New York
- At least 2 years of experience practicing law
- Demonstrated commitment to improving access to the courts for those without legal representation
- Comfort and knowledge of federal court practice, preferably with substantial experience
- Experience in a variety of subject matter areas, particularly employment discrimination and civil rights
- Excellent people and client counseling skills
- Patience, empathy, persistence, and openness in delivering client services
- Dedication to promoting equity within and outside of the organization
- Strong communication, research, writing, and analytical skills
- Creative problem-solving abilities and ability to manage a high case load
