Our organization offers hands-on internships for students interested in gaining experience in investigations, client communication, research and writing, trial preparation and advocacy, and more. Our internships provide students with the opportunity to gain practical experience in various practice areas, including criminal defense, parental representation, law guardian, mental health advocacy, sex offenses, and more. Responsibilities of Investigator Interns - Locating and interviewing witnesses - Serving subpoenas - Researching and gathering information and documents - Conducting field investigations, such as photographing crime scenes and examining evidence - Drafting reports - Attending court proceedings and training programs Graduate students in fields such as social work can also apply to intern in our specialized units, including Recovery Court and Mental Health Advocacy. How to Apply To apply for an internship with NJOPD, please submit a cover letter explaining why you are interested in interning with us, your practice areas of interest, geographic preferences or limitations, and availability. Applications are considered on a rolling basis and must be received between June 15th and July 31st (Fall), between October 15th and November 30th (Spring), and between December 15th and April 15th (Summer). In addition to submitting application materials, all applicants must be interviewed by a regional office and/or our Internship Coordinator, complete confidentiality and ethics paperwork, and be screened and approved before being offered an internship with NJOPD. About NJOPD The New Jersey Office of the Public Defender (NJOPD) is dedicated to providing first-class legal representation to indigent individuals at both the trial and appellate levels. Our attorneys defend individuals charged with criminal offenses, represent parents whose children have been removed due to allegations of abuse and neglect, advocate for children who have been removed from their homes, represent individuals involuntarily committed to state psychiatric facilities, and more. We also have specialized units for sex offense cases, post-conviction relief, and forensic science.
