The Nonprofit Tax Manager is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, and recognizing, communicating potential risks and potential changes in the tax policy. The ideal candidate will have five (5) or more years of nonprofit tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services experience. ## Job Summary The Nonprofit Tax Manager is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex non-profit tax issues. In this role, the Nonprofit Tax Manager is charged with applying knowledge to understand potential tax disclosure, exemption and unrelated business income issues, and recognizing, communicating potential risks and potential changes in the tax policy and making top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation and resolution of questions from federal / state agencies. In addition, the Nonprofit Tax Manager will be critical member of the regional Nonprofit Tax team and actively participate in the marketing and networking within an area of expertise and specialization while maintaining client relationships and acting as the primary contact for complex questions. ## Job Duties The Nonprofit Tax Manager will be responsible for a variety of duties, including: * Ensuring both that (a) clients comply with all applicable authorities, while at the same time minimizing their tax and reporting burdens, and (b) self and client service teams comply with all Company policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (“TQM”) * Conducting review of T/R’s and resolving all tax issues with client; involving specialists where appropriate * Planning for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consulting with the client and/or partner as appropriate * Review of ASC 740-10 (Uncertain Tax Positions) workpapers and disclosure for audited financial statements * Planning and reviewing the tax process and the procedures to be performed to include: * Budgeting and staffing * Monitoring engagement process and actual time incurred vs. budget with assistance of Senior * Timely billing including management of identified out-of-scope activity and communication to client * Timely collection of A/R * Managing client relationships/expectations in accordance with the project * Providing advice to clients in a timely manner * Identifying when research is needed; clearly and concisely framing issues to be researched; and clearly and concisely reporting the analysis * Assisting with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient and effective methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing clients’ current and future taxes * Applying the combination of tax knowledge and knowledge of business/industry to recommend solutions * Developing and implementing a work plan to include/organize the STS assistance on ongoing projects from client * Serving as a technical resource to peers within the region * Managing written or phone inquiries from federal and state agencies with little or no assistance * Introducing and developing new or improved ideas to improve the position of clients, the Company, or Company personnel, ., by reducing taxes or expenses or providing nonprofit tax benefits * Reviewing studies of tax implications and offering clients alternative courses of action * Researching and implementing nonprofit tax strategies, including experimentation with promising new strategies and ideas * Identifying and leveraging lessons learned on prior projects, and offering input on how to improve processes and methods * Supervising associates and senior associates on all projects * Reviewing work prepared by associates and senior associates and providing review comments * Training Associates and Seniors how to use all current software tools * Acting as a Career Advisor to associates and senior associates * Scheduling and managing workload of associates and senior associates * Providing verbal and written performance feedback to associates and senior associates ## Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications, knowledge, skills and abilities: * Bachelors degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics preferred * Masters in Accountancy or Taxation preferred * Five (5) or more years of nonprofit tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services experience required * Prior supervisory experience required * CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a . jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (“EA”) (or the equivalent of one of these designations) required * Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role preferred * Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite preferred * Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred * Superior verbal and written communication skills * Ability to effectively delegate work as needed * Strong analytical, research and critical thinking skills as well as decision-making skills * Capacity to work well in a team environment * Capable of developing and managing a team of tax professionals * Ability to compose written tax advice * Capable of effectively developing and maintaining client relationships * Executive presence and ability to act as primary client contact for preparation and presentation of issues and resolutions to clients ## Salary Individual salaries that
