Public Counsel is seeking a Senior Staff Attorney to join our Women & Girls’ Rights Project (WGR). This full-time, exempt position offers a competitive salary range of $86,600-$102,400 for attorneys with 6-11 years of experience, as well as a comprehensive benefits package. The ideal candidate will have a Juris Doctor degree, admission to the California bar, at least 6 years of litigation experience, and a strong background in employment and/or civil rights litigation. Fluency in Spanish, Tagalog, Mandarin, Korean, or Armenian is a plus.

As a nonprofit public interest law firm, Public Counsel is dedicated to advancing civil rights and racial and economic justice, as well as amplifying the power of our clients through comprehensive legal advocacy. We operate eight legal projects, including WGR, which focuses on advancing gender justice for women, girls, and gender-expansive individuals. Founded in 2017, WGR engages in direct legal services, impact litigation, and policy work at the intersection of race, poverty, and gender.

In this role, the Senior Staff Attorney will provide trauma-informed legal services to WGR’s clients, with a focus on workplace justice and Title IX. This includes providing clients with legal advice and representing them in administrative and litigation matters. The Senior Staff Attorney will also prepare and present “Know Your Rights” trainings for community partners and members, support WGR’s policy reform efforts at the local, state, and federal level, and participate in coalitions with community partners and stakeholders to advance our policy advocacy.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a strong background in employment and/or civil rights litigation, as well as experience and/or a desire to work with individuals of diverse cultural, racial, geographic, and economic backgrounds. They should also possess excellent organizational, case management, and analytical skills, as well as the ability to communicate in an empathetic and professional manner with supervisor, team members, and clients. A commitment to gender justice, social justice, and the mission of Public Counsel is essential.

In addition to providing direct legal services, the Senior Staff Attorney will also assist with program development by helping to draft grant reports, work with and provide technical assistance to pro bono volunteers as needed, mentor and help supervise law clerk volunteers, and perform other duties as assigned. They will also work closely with the social work team to ensure clients have access to needed supports.

Requirements for this position include a Juris Doctor degree, admission to the California bar, at least 6 years of litigation experience, and a strong background in employment and/or civil rights litigation. The ideal candidate should also have experience and/or a desire to work with individuals of diverse cultural, racial, geographic, and economic backgrounds, and be detail-oriented, able to multi-task, set priorities, and work independently, but in close coordination with other staff. Fluency in Spanish, Tagalog, Mandarin, Korean, or Armenian is a plus.
