Job Title: Staff Attorney - DNA Unit Organization: The Legal Aid Society Department: Criminal Defense Practice Location: New York, NY Salary Range: $74,909 to $130,308 Overview: The Legal Aid Society's Criminal Defense Practice is seeking a Staff Attorney for its DNA Unit. This position will involve providing support to attorneys handling DNA matters, developing litigation strategies for forensic feature comparison methods, and advocating for policy changes. The Staff Attorney will also be responsible for maintaining a caseload of DNA and forensic feature comparison cases and providing support for other Society attorneys. Responsibilities: - Writing motions, appellate briefs, and amicus briefs - Representing clients in criminal proceedings involving DNA and other forensic feature comparisons - Developing litigation strategies surrounding fingerprints, firearms/toolmark comparisons, and other forensic feature comparisons - Providing support and assistance for other Society attorneys handling forensic feature comparison cases - Providing in-house and external training on forensic feature comparison issues - Providing back-up support for other defense attorneys in New York City - Advocating for policy changes, as needed Requirements: - - Demonstrated aptitude for evaluating scientific evidence, such as on DNA - Substantial background in forensics, or the demonstrated aptitude and willingness to acquire such knowledge and maintain expertise - Excellent oral advocacy skills - Excellent research and writing skills - Excellent ability to train other staff - Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills - Ability and willingness to work as part of a citywide team Salary Transparency: The specific salary offer for this role will be dependent on candidate qualifications and experience. The salary range for this position is $74,909 to $130,308. Salary and benefits information will be available to applicants when an offer is made.
