This is a 1-year temporary position with the opportunity for reassignment to a permanent staff attorney position within the Civil Practice after the assignment has concluded. The Immigration Law Unit provides comprehensive immigration services to low-income New Yorkers, including removal defense, affirmative and defensive asylum, and representation before various immigration authorities. The Staff Attorney will primarily serve New York City immigrants, including individuals with criminal convictions and recent arrivals seeking asylum. They will also work collaboratively with experienced staff in other projects within the Unit. As a Staff Attorney, essential duties and responsibilities include providing legal representation to immigrants in Immigration Court, seeking special findings orders in Family Court, and providing client services during evening and weekend hours. Additionally, the Staff Attorney will train and mentor law students, pro bono attorneys, and volunteers, conduct forums and workshops in immigrant communities, and maintain and update case files and management databases.
