Organization: National Immigrant Justice Center Department: Legal Services Benefits: 401k Medical (including HSA) Dental and Vision Insurance FSA (Flexible Spending Account) Short and Long Term Disability EAP (Employee Assistance Program) Life Insurance Practice Areas: Immigrant Legal Defense (Spanish required) Asylum Children’s Project for non-detained and Children’s Protection Project LGBTQ Project Detention Project Litigation Job Description: The National Immigrant Justice Center is seeking Staff Attorneys to provide legal consultations, advice and representation to low-income immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers. The staff attorney position requires the ability to engage in community outreach, representation for clients at EOIR and/or USCIS, and provide legal consultations at off-site locations. Key Responsibilities: Conduct preliminary intake interviews and gather all relevant facts for presentation at Unit meetings. Assess income eligibility and make appropriate referrals for individuals not eligible for Organization services. Develop and implement preliminary case strategy in terms of immigration law and procedure. Prepare cases for hearing, including drafting legal papers, engaging in negotiation, and presenting evidence. Conduct assessments of clients' social, psychological, and economic functioning and determine appropriate interventions and referrals. Manage a volume of cases as required by the department and maintain in-depth knowledge of legal and other resources. Remain current on immigration law, policies, and procedures, as well as implications of criminal and civil law as it applies to the representation of immigrants and refugees. Develop and maintain professional relationships with government and social service organizations, as well as interpret immigration and department policies and programs to the public. Maintain complete and accurate client records and prepare timely statistical reports. Participate in training on immigration procedures and assist with developing, implementing, or leading special projects. Interpret and translate for department and other Organization staff as needed. Qualifications: Juris Doctorate Degree required. One year of direct experience in social service counseling and/or legal representation. Ability to read, speak, and write in at least one non-English language. Analytical skills to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Reasoning ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Salary Information: The salary range for this position is $60,815 - $69,112.
