Job Title:

Staff Attorney - Immigration Law Unit

Job Summary:

The Staff Attorney in the Immigration Law Unit will be responsible for providing direct legal representation to low- and middle-income immigrants on a variety of immigration issues. This includes citizenship applications, waivers of the oath of citizenship for immigrants with a disability, green card applications, Asylum applications, DACA applications, and more. The Attorney will also provide representation to individuals in removal proceedings and will travel within New York State and the Finger Lakes Region. This position is based in the Legal Aid office in Rochester, NY.

Responsibilities:

Draft and review legal pleadings, motions, and papers
Conduct disclosure and investigation and file motions
Consult and negotiate with other counsel and parties
Represent clients at all appearances, hearings, and proceedings
File notices of appeal, settle orders and records, and represent clients in post-dispositional proceedings
Provide community outreach, education, and training
Review the work of assigned support staff
Transcribe complete and accurate case notes through LegalServer
Conduct legal research as needed
Stay updated on legislative changes and case law through Continuing Legal Education training
Attend and participate in meetings and gatherings with colleagues and community partners
Provide legal support to other programs when necessary

Requirements:

Juris Doctor degree and admission to any state bar, or awaiting admission
Prior experience in immigration law, NYS Criminal law, or Federal/Administrative law preferred
Ability to communicate in a language other than English is a plus
High level of initiative, self-motivation, and organization
Excellent legal research, writing, and negotiating skills
Ability to effectively articulate thoughts and ideas
Respectful and empathetic consideration for clients
Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and community partners
Access to reliable transportation
