Job Overview: A law firm seeks an Associate Attorney to join its Environmental and Land Use practice in Northern California. This position is designed for attorneys with 1-3 years of substantive experience in land use and environmental law within the state. The role involves a hybrid remote arrangement, with the opportunity to work from either the South San Francisco or Sacramento office. This position offers the chance to advocate for sustainable development while balancing environmental protection and community benefits.

Duties:

  • Perform factual investigations and conduct in-depth legal research to support case strategies.
  • Collaborate with a team of experienced attorneys and staff to address various legal and regulatory issues.
  • Prepare and present legal motions, briefs, and other written advocacy materials.
  • Represent clients in front of federal and state regulatory agencies, municipalities, and local government bodies.
  • Engage in settlement discussions and participate in courtroom litigation as needed.
  • Collaborate with scientists and subject matter experts to build robust legal arguments.
  • Participate in regulatory rulemaking, legislative hearings, and other advocacy initiatives.
  • Travel as necessary for case-related activities, seminars, hearings, and meetings with clients.

Requirements:

  • 1-3 years of relevant legal experience in environmental and land use law in California.
  • Strong passion for promoting sustainable development and community-oriented solutions.
  • Demonstrated commitment to public interest law and environmental advocacy.
  • Excellent research, writing, and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative, diverse, and inclusive team.
  • Willingness to travel when required for legal matters and client engagements.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active membership with the California Bar.

Certifications:

  • California Bar license in good standing.

Skills:

  • Strong analytical and legal writing capabilities.
  • Proficient in litigation and oral advocacy.
  • Ability to distill complex legal and technical issues for diverse audiences.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills for working with clients and team members.
  • Organized, proactive, and detail-oriented in managing legal cases and documents.
  • Comfortable working with scientific and regulatory experts to develop legal strategies.
