Organization: The Legal Aid Society Job Title: Staff Attorney-Criminal Defense/Felony Experience Salary Range: $79,591 - $130,308 Experience: Minimum of 3 years, some experience in felony matters Location: Citywide, New York, NY Job Description: The Legal Aid Society, the nation's oldest and largest social justice legal services organization, is seeking dedicated and passionate Staff Attorneys with felony trial experience to join the Criminal Defense Practice. This practice is the primary public defender in New York City, providing holistic, client-centered representation to over 200,000 individuals facing misdemeanor, felony, and homicide charges. The Staff Attorney will provide zealous advocacy in all phases of a client's criminal legal matter, from arraignments through hearings and trials, as well as other related proceedings. Key Responsibilities: - Provide comprehensive representation from arraignments through trial, disposition, or dismissal - Prepare cases for advocacy and litigation, including referrals for investigation and social work services, and conducting bail review and habeas corpus hearings - Coordinate with specialty units for advocacy, such as DNA, Digital Forensics, Decarceration, and Immigration - Consult and coordinate with supervising attorneys for case reviews - Review discovery materials and prepare for litigation - Conduct preliminary hearings, suppression hearings, and trials - Prepare mitigation materials for diversion courts or sentencing - Advise and enter appropriate pleas in consultation with clients - File notices of appeal and coordinate with appellate counsel Requirements: - Minimum of 3 years of demonstrated commitment to public defense, racial equity, and social justice - Experience handling felony matters in New York State or other jurisdictions - Clear and effective oral and written advocacy skills - High level of organization to meet multiple competing deadlines - New York State bar admission or ability to waive in from another jurisdiction Salary and Benefits: - Salary range of $79,591 - $130,308, dependent on candidate qualifications and collective bargaining agreements for unionized roles - Generous benefits package, including health insurance, paid vacation, disability, and life insurance - Eligibility for Public Service Loan Forgiveness and other state and federal loan forgiveness programs - Assistance for New York residents with loan repayments, depending on years of practice Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: The Legal Aid Society is committed to a work culture of zealous advocacy, respect, diversity and inclusion, client-oriented defense, access to justice, and excellent representation.
