ProfileAssistant Attorney General The candidate will represent the State of New York and its agencies and officers in state and federal courts in legal actions and proceedings relating to civil rights, education, social services, public employment, public health, law enforcement, corrections, state finance, insurance, taxation, and other litigated matters arising out of state operations and legislation. Will defend a wide variety of state and federal court actions involving, among other things, constitutional, civil rights, labor and employment, state regulation, and administrative law issues. Responsibilities include acting as lead or secondary counsel on a variety of litigation matters; preparing briefs and motion papers; appearing in court; engaging in oral argument; managing discovery; negotiating settlements; and conducting trials, as well as other duties, as assigned.
Qualification and Experience
The candidate must possess at least six (6) years of experience in litigation. This experience must include acting as lead counsel or second seating at least three (3) trials or complex evidentiary hearings in either federal or state court and engaging in discovery and motion practice. Superior research, writing, and advocacy skills are required. Must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York State and be admitted to practice law in New York State. Must be citizens of the United States. A two (2) year commitment upon being hired is a condition of employment.
