The ABA is currently seeking a Staff Attorney 2 to join its Children and the Law team. The Staff Attorney 2 will conduct research and write speeches, memoranda, articles, and other legal documents for publication. They will provide substantive advice, information and make policy recommendations, serve as the ABA’s principal expert on a substantive area of law or public policy, facilitate multidisciplinary convenings, design and deliver substantive content for presentations and training, commit to promoting racial justice, inclusion, and cultural sensitivity in projects, training, writings, and policies, and assist with co-managing and updating project website and other communication platforms.

The successful candidate will have a , at least four (4) years of working in child welfare or other relevant specialized area of law, experience in health law, social and racial justice, grant management is a plus, and a high level of skills at legal writing and research, oral and written communications, and organizational skill. Additionally, they must have the ability to travel 20%.

The American Bar Association offers a competitive salary for this position, with a min hiring rate of $89, and a max hiring rate of $109,.

## Job Summary/General Purpose of Job
- Substantive legal work and may manage a grant funded project or provide substantive support to an ABA entity
- May manage that entity
- May be supervised by another attorney and frequently supervises more junior attorneys and/or other staff
- Includes legal research, writing, speaking, provision of technical assistance, and may include grant development and/or fundraising

## Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
- Conduct research and write speeches, memoranda, articles, frequently for publication
- Provide substantive advice, information and make policy recommendations
- Serve as principal ABA expert on a substantive area of law or public policy
- Includes contacts with government entities and with the media
- Commit to promoting racial justice, inclusion, and cultural sensitivity in projects, training, writings, and policies
- Facilitate multidisciplinary convenings, build and maintain relationships with community stakeholders including persons with lived experience, medical schools, medical providers, public health, child welfare, legal and judicial, and race equity experts
- Coordinate or support member sub-groups and coordinate with external constituencies
- Design and deliver substantive content for presentations and training
- Contribute to writing of proposals for additional grant funding
- Assist with co-managing and updating project website and other communication platforms, including technical aspects and social media
- Give presentations and/or teach on legal and public policy issues
- Act as a consultant designing substantive content of events, developing model documents, and conducting training
- Manage substantive/legal project aspects
- Oversee research, report-writing, and publication
- Coordinate or support member sub-groups and coordinate with external constituencies
- Manage consultants, interns/externs
- Analyze laws, regulations, court rules and policies/policy proposals
- Prepare memoranda of law or on public policy
- Provide legal counsel
- Research, draft, write, review and critique legislative/rule/policy or regulatory text
- Manage policy adoption process
- Secure outside funding
- Write grants
- Deal with grant makers
- Perform other related duties as required

## Required Education, Qualifications, Experience

- At least four (4) years working in child welfare or other relevant specialized area of law
- Experience in health law, social and racial justice, grant management is a plus
- High level of skills at legal writing and research, oral and written communications, and organizational skill
- Substantial experience in policy analysis
